Sonologue contributed two pieces to a special show of South Asia Wired on hunger. The timing couldn’t be better, the Hindustan Times led with a front page story on how the Supreme Court has slammed the UP government for collusion in perpetuating malnutrition and hunger in the state. The SAW piece features activist Arundhati Dhuru speaking on the case and, on the flip side, also features one story of hope - a working model in a small town called Devlali where no one sleeps hungry. Download or stream to hear more about the puri-bhaji centre spearheaded by businessman Maharaj Virmani contrasted with mud-eating children in Ganne village.

MUMBAI: Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) has entered into a new partnership with All India Radio (AIR) for co-production of a show - Earth Beat.

Both organisations will work together in the co production called Earth Beat India. The programme will be broadcast nationally by AIR in English and Hindi every two weeks.

RNW had partnered with the Gyaan Vani radio channels promoted by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in December 2009 for the same show.

The Earth Beat team sees monitoring the earth’s heartbeat as our task. They look at our footprint on this world and run stories of the people trying to make that footprint lighter.

Earth Beat India is looking at what we create, develop, conserve and destroy; meeting and challenging the people who are making these changes. It is about questioning the way we live now and exploring the issues that will affect our common future.

RNW offers international stories with new opinions, green gadgets and green wash while AIR brings the Indian perspective. This co production seeks to bridge the approach of developed and developing countries on environmental issues. The presentation is in hands of Chhavi Sachdev and Poonam Girdhani.

Commenting on the partnership, RNW Director General Jan Hoek says, “As an international broadcaster we make daily productions in 10 languages and we work together worldwide with more than 3000 partner radio stations. With this new cooperation we embrace our 11th language Hindi and a major party in India.”

RNW works together in India with amongst others Private FM, IGNOU University Radio, various websites, cable TV service and now with State broadcasters.

Prasar Bharati CEO B S Lalli comments, “I am happy that All India Radio and Radio Netherlands Worldwide have joined hands in co-producing and broadcasting a series of radio programmes called ‘Earth Beat’ on their networks. The issues pertaining to environment and sustainability of growth are globally relevant. I hope these programmes will assist in promoting proper awareness and interest of our audiences. I am also hopeful that the two organizations will be able to expand the areas of mutual cooperation and assistance.”

AIR will broadcast the English episodes of Earth Beat India from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Panaji, Shillong and the National Channel of AIR, while the Hindi versions of Earth Beat India will be broadcast from Delhi, Lucknow, Patna, Bhopal, Jaipur, Shimla, Ranchi, Raipur, Rohtak, Port Blair and Itanagar at the respective radio stations.

blueFROG partners Sonologue for Podcasts, Radioandmusic.com, December 2009, by Anita Iyer

MUMBAI: Music venue blueFROG has teamed up with Sonologue, the online audio content and production house to launch podcast - Live From the blueFROG. The series would be hosted by Chhavi Sachdev and produced by Sonologue.

The association, that stakes claim to being India’s first artist interview series, ‘Live From the blueFROG’, would entail a series of interviews on musicians talking about their musical journey. Each podcast has two components: an audio interview of musicians about their musical journey and an exclusive live track from the blueFROG archives.

The first episode featuring Gaurav Raina and Tapan Raj of the Midival Punditz was out last week. “The podcast would be uploaded every fortnight and the artists lined up include Karsh Kale, Shaair + Func, Oliver Rajamani to name a few. The podcast will also include international artists who perform at Blue Frog.”

The podcast including the interview and exclusive acoustic track by the artists is available for free download on both the websites. “We are not looking at monetisation at the moment as the concept of podcast is still novel in India. Advertising can be embedded in the audio and on the website but the podcasts would be available for free as we don’t want to charge the listeners.”

“The awareness for the blueFROG podcast is higher in the international markets, so we would be concentrating on promoting it in Indian markets. The first leg would include targeting social networking sites. blueFROG plans to let the audiences pick their artist to be interviewed for the podcast.”

Sustainability haunts Community radio, radioandmusic.com, November 2009, by Anita Iyer.

MUMBAI: Community radio is a radio station for, by and of the community. This adage was cemented at the community radio workshop in Mumbai last week.

Held at Juhu in suburban Mumbai, the two day workshop- ‘Community Radio: tuning into diversity’ offered guidelines on setting up, managing and sustaining a community radio station.

Operational community run stations in India like DDS Sangham, Mangalore based Radio Sarang, MVSS from Satara, Radio Bundelkhand, Radio Ujjas of Kutch Mahila Vikas Sanghatan, related their success stories which emphasized on community involvement.

The focus on day one was on operational stations who completed one year and sustainability was the key concern for these stations at the forum. Walking the audiences through their stations, they related experiences of trails and triumphs of setting up a station.

DDS Sangham presented a successful model of subscription, where the community of 5000 people contributes Rs. 50 annually for recovering the operational cost of the station.

Apart from the success stories, the workshop touched upon points of procedure of setting up a station, funding, technicalities, advertising avenues, content production, archiving of content etc. CR applicant Naveen Chandra from Bandra based Union park residents association explained the process of applying for license.

Hemant Babu of Nomad transmitters simplified the technicalities in setting up community radio and proclaimed that funding should not be a hurdle for communication. Elaborating on low cost equipment for setting up community radio, he said that a station can be initiated in Rs. 1 lakh as well.

On the technical side, the event also saw presentation by Gram Vaani who exhibited their GRINS technology.

On the second day, Brian Tellis from Radio Active spoke about integration of community radio with mobile technology. He advised Radio Bundelkhand which received 60 calls every week to encourage the concept of mobile technology in the interiors to increase interactivity.

Chhavi Sachdev of audio content and production house Sonologue introduced the audience to concept of carving listeners through social networking site and increasing visibility. Content production being one of the key issues for community radio, Sachdev has flagged off an upcoming online portal – sharewave.in, a platform for stations to share relevant content with attribution.

Online integration was followed by Friji Karhikeyan, developer of an online radio channel- Radio Schizoid. She explained the need for hosting a music enabled website for spreading local music and creating a buzz about community radio.

Attendees from different walks were present at the workshop including radio operators, technical professionals, community radio applicants, license seekers and radio enthusiasts.

Although the workshop touched upon many aspects of community radio, the question of raising finance and sustainability was still left unanswered.
